Being Pompey mascot

Dear Ben,

As part of your Christmas present, we gave you a voucher to be a gold mascot at the Leyton Orient match against Pompey, two days before you turn 11. I wanted to give you your present as a Christmas present for two reasons - one, to get you to tell your friends and start feeling excited about it, and two, to give you time to get used to it. You see, we booked this about six months ago, to ensure you got a match on your birthday weekend. I wasn't sure then how you'd react. You are a funny old fish sometimes: when we expect you to be dead excited, you play the unemotional tween; then from time to time, you surprise us. It's a given that, being a Curtis, you'd be like your dad when showing emotions, ie, not showing much at all! I also remember that when you were little, you didn't like face-painting, dressing-up or going up on stage at a party. I had a sneaking feeling that you might not like being a mascot if I'm honest...

However, fast forward to the day. Obviously Dad went round with you. You met the players in their dressing room. We'd joked that you were going to advise them on tactics! You got to run on the pitch with a player, oh no because Burgess was doing his hair, you were player-less, but then Chaplin (your favourite) appeared. You must've been a lucky mascot for him because although he missed a penalty, he did go on to score his first goal just afterwards, then a second in the second half! It ended up 2-1 to us (phew on your special day!).

Both sets of grandparents came to watch you , as well as me, and we were very proud to see your shock of white hair, sporting a Pompey kit, training on pitch and walking round the stadium.

Dad said you were a bit star-struck in the dressing room. Well who wouldn't be? These guys are heroes!

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, and will look back on this special occasion when you're older.

Love Mum x
